The Lecture Series 1 is the implementation of the capacity training for the
Groundwater Management Plan for Zamboanga, Cagayan de Oro, Iloilo, Metro Manila and
its surrounding areas (GMP) and Philippine Groundwater Outlook (PHIGO) projects of
Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU). The projects are jointly funded by the National Water
Resources Board (NWRB) and the Philippine Council for Industry, Energy and Emerging
Technology Research and Development (PCIEERD).

The Lecture Series I is the implementation of the capacity training for the Groundwater Management Plan for Zamboanga, Cagayan de Oro, Iloilo, Metro Manila and its surrounding areas (GMP) and Philippine Groundwater Outlook (PHIGO) projects of Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU). The projects are jointly funded by the National Water Resources Board (NWRB) and the Philippine Council for Industry, Energy and Emerging Technology Research and Development (PCIEERD).
The main objectives of Lecture Series I are:
▪ Understand the basic knowledge about geology and groundwater resources;
▪ Apply Visual MODFLOW Flex to create a groundwater model;
▪ Become familiar with navigating the Geographical User Interface (GUI) and steps for conceptual modeling;
▪ Define a 3D geological model and flow properties.
This 2nd lecture series, entitled “Water Quality and Quantity”, was held at CTC-PLDT
Building in the Ateneo De Manila University on February 27, 2019. The lecture focused on different
monitoring techniques to quantify various water quality parameters as applied to ground and surface
waters. This was presented by Emilyn Q. Espiritu, Ph.D. and Jewel Raquel S. Unson, MSc. and was
attended by the participants from AdZU, NWRB, PAGASA and the members of the Ateneo project
team.

The 2nd lecture series was opened by welcoming remarks from Ateneo De Manila University’s Associate Dean for Research and Creative work, Ma. Louise Antonette N. de las Peñas, Ph.D. It was then followed by the overview of the program and introduction to the speakers by the Project Leader, Maria Leah Aileen G. Guzman, Ph.D. Next, Emilyn Q. Espiritu, Ph.D, Associate Professor of Department of Environmental Science at Ateneo De Manila University, presented the Introduction of Water Quality Monitoring, Regulatory Requirements in the Philippine Context, and Surface and Groundwater Monitoring Strategies/Techniques. On the second part of the lecture, Jewel Raquel S. Unson, MSc., Instructor of Department of Environmental Science at Ateneo De Manila University, discussed the Water Quality Assurance in Environmental Research and Uses of Various Physico- chemical Parameters in Water Quality Monitoring. During the afternoon, the participants had a laboratory equipment demonstration and simulation activity wherein each group was assigned a specific component in the case study. The group presented their findings at the end of the activity. The delegates were able to identify possible sources of pollution in their designated sector, identified possible sites to monitor, relevant parameters to be monitored and their recommendations in the designated sector.
